plant sonification

double bass player margarethe maierhofer-lischka and recorder player gobi drab share a passion for low frequencies and hypnotic, organic soundscapes that are entirely free of electronic intervention. the artists use their own voices as a logical extension of the sound world created by the two low-pitched instruments, the double bass and the paetzold recorder. all the sounds in their work are created in the moment, drawing on a wealth of musical experience ranging from early music to new music and sound art. everything audible, all the noises of the environment, and the physical gestures involved in making music become part of the listening experience and thus also part of the music. the never-silent environment and the tangible physical presence of the two performers in their music are therefore an integral part of this unconventional duo.

in an unusual experimental setup, the duo incorporates plants as a “third player”: an interface translates the electrical activity patterns of the plant matter into sounds. This creates a musical dialogue between humans and plant—an invitation to listen to processes beyond conscious control.
